The Best Part?!

"Myler curled up beside her, hardly flinching as his fur pressed against her bloody body. "I'll stay with you," he promised. "You're safe now."

Now this was hard to do! I really truly do love the entire book! The depth and description in the book is just amazing. You can really feel how the character feels. If I had to pick one part as my favorite, I would choose when Mapleshade is finished killing Appledusk. She just seems SO at peace! This section maybe when Mapleshade is the happiest. In this part, she runs into a barn where she meets a loner (cat with no clan) named Myler. He only wants to help. Mapleshade tells him: "Leave me alone. I don't need anyone," which to me is really sad. If Mapleshade had let Myler help her, this would've totally changed the story. She may have survived.  I don't know if that's a good thing though. That's the only thing I don't like about this part. After Mapleshade refuses Myler, Mapleshade shows some doubt: "For a moment Mapleshade longed to call him back." This part is also the part where she dies. The book describes this feeling as "heavier than stones, stronger than the river." I feel like when she dies, she dies at peace. It even says: "instead of dread, Mapleshade felt a surge of triumph." This makes me feel like she died at peace, like she was happy with the time she died. Being a fan of Mapleshade, this makes me happy. That is the best part of the story Mapleshade's Vengeance!

What's it All About?

"Instead of dread, Mapleshade felt a surge of triumph. If she was here because of what she endured, then there would be other cats like her, cats who would understand what she had gone through, who knew what it was to stand up to their enemies and dole out immeasurable pain."

RISING ACTION: It all starts off with a battle between the Sunning Rocks, Thunderclan vs Riverclan. Thunderclan wins, but Appledusk accidentaly kills two cats, Birchface and his apprentice.  Appledusk accidentally knocked them into a river, and they drowned. Thunderclan and Riverclan are furious at each other. Later Mapleshade heads to the gathering with her clan, then she heads over to Riverclan to see Appledusk. When she finds him, she tells him about her kits she will be having. He is nervous, because he is a member of Riverclan, and she is a member of Thunderclan. This means the kits will be half clan, but Mapleshade has great belief, and trust in Starclan, and her clan. The next morning she tells the deputy of the clan, Beetail, that she can no longer do her duties as a warrior, he replies asking her who the father will be. She just tells him she will be raising them alone. Frecklewish, Birchface's sister, overhears them talking, and when she returns from the border patrol she asks Mapleshade: "Beetail told me your news! I'm so happy for you!" Then she asks: "Beetail also told me you will be raising these kits alone... Is...Is it because their father is dead?" Mapleshade sees this as Starclan giving her a chance to have her kits welcomed into her clan. So she doesn't reply, and Frecklewish assumes she is right. When Mapleshade's kits arrive, she has one girl and two boys. She decides to name them: Larchkit, Petalkit, and Patchkit.  Everyone thinks Birchface is their father, but he's not. One day Mapleshade decides to take the kits out, they fall into the river, but are able to swim back. Only cats from Riverclan can swim.  Ravenwing sees them playing, and comes out from hiding. She puts two and two together and tells Mapleshade that she found out her secret. She rushes back and tells the whole clan. Everyone is furious at her, and she is exiled. A storm begins to rage, and Mapleshade decides the only place left to go is Riverclan. She forces her kits to cross the river once again, but they are very tired. They are so weak they cannot cross the river, so Riverclan rushes to help. Unfortunately, none of the kits made it. Appledusk decides it's Mapleshade's fault his kits drowned, and denies Mapleshade for his new mate, Reedshine.  "Mapleshade felt her heart break into pieces." describes how Mapleshade felt.

CLIMAX: Riverclan says Mapleshade cannot stay. This is partly because Appledusk won't support her, and Riverclan won't even let her bury her kits. Appledusk begs for mercy, and gets off scot free. Mapleshade is infuriated, and her heart is broken into a million pieces. She's lost everything, and has nothing left. She leaves seeking revenge.

FALLING ACTION: She must avenge her kits. She wanders over to where the Moonstone is located. She comes across Ravenwings apprentice, Nettlepaw. Nettlepaw tells her that Frecklewish saw her kits drowning in the water. She decides she has to go after Ravenwing first, as she started all of this. She spots Ravenwing going into the Moonstone, and she goes into the cave and hides there too. Then she springs and kills Ravenwing. Next she must get Frecklewish, since she watched her kits drown. She decides to go to the sunning rocks. She sees Frecklewish hunting by the rocks. She lures out a adder snake,  which bites Frecklewish.  Frecklewish dies, and she heads off to get Appledusk, this last and final part of her revenge. Mapleshade comes across Appledusk's apprentice. She holds him captive until Appledusk appears. They battle each other until Appledusk dies, and Mapleshade is very wounded. Reedshine bounds out of the bushes and her belly is swollen with kits. Mapleshade vows: "I will watch over all your kin and punish each one for what you did to me, my vengeance is not finished yet. It will never be finished!"

RESOLUTION: Mapleshade crawls away from the scene, a loner cat tries to help her, but she refuses. She dies, but does not enter Starclan, but rather, the Darkforest. But she doesn't care, since, at last, she is with cats who understand her feelings. She can finally revenge her kits in peace.'

Welcome to the Forest

                                                       THE FOREST
This story takes place in a forest, just outside of the town. This is home to four clans.: Thunderclan, Riverclan, Windclan, and Shadowclan.  This does not include Starclan, which is cat heaven, or The Dark Forest, which is cat hell.  Skyclan and Bloodclan are not included because they has not been discovered yet.  The clans all hunt, and battle over space and food. It is a forest that has been able to furnish all four clans for decades. All four clans come together every moon (month) and meet.   There is a peace treaty at this time. Windclan territory is on a moor, which allows them to use their special abilities to catch rabbits. In Riverclan there is a river, which they use their ability to catch fish, and swim to help them to survive. Shadowclan and Thunderclan both live in the more wooded part of the forest, and usually catch mice, and voles.

Meet The Characters

Mapleshade's Vengeance
By Erin Hunter
The first main character is: Mapleshade.  She is a tortoiseshell cat, who has a dark, depressed personality. She is very loyal, and her age is unknown.  All we know is that she is an adult cat. The second main character is Appledusk. Appledusk is a loving, male cat. He has a light brown coat.  He was previously Mapleshade's mate until he denied her, and blamed her for the death of her kits. This is why Mapleshade's story so sad.  I could never, in a million years, feel the pain she is feeling.
